KAILUA-KONA — Mauna Kea Recreation Area is back open after the county remedied maintenance issues at the park.

KAILUA-KONA — Mauna Kea Recreation Area is back open after the county remedied maintenance issues at the park.

Department of Parks and Recreation staff said on Tuesday that the park was closed because of a lack of water.

The closure came just months after the county celebrated an $11.6 million upgrade at the park. On Tuesday, Parks and Rec staff said there wasn’t any water at the park, and it was unclear why.

One day later, on Wednesday, the department issued a brief statement saying the issues had been remedied and the park was reopened.

Brittany Kaleohano said the water tanks at the recreation area were empty. She said they weren’t sure why they were empty. She added that they were able to get the tanks filled though and reopen the park.

Kaleohano said she didn’t know what, if any, cost was involved.
